WHERE DO I BEGIN?

All clients who attend the Reading Therapy Center, Inc. begin with a thorough evaluation that generally lasts 2-3 hours. Following this evaluation, the examiner will discuss the test results, offer recommendations, and answer questions; consultations generally last 1 hour. A written report based on the testing and consultation will be mailed to the client about two weeks from the assessment date.

Our assessment measures the following areas:

• reading comprehension
• oral comprehension
• phonological processing (including phonemic awareness)
• oral reading
• sight word recognition
• word attack skills
• spelling
• vocabulary
• receptive and expressive language ability
• rapid naming
• math concepts, computation, and word problems (upon request)
  

The purpose of the assessment is to identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses and determine any factors that may be contributing to the student’s difficulty with schoolwork. It also allows us to develop a customized plan that will address the student’s exact difficulties.

Should a client wish to pursue therapy, a treatment plan will be established based on the testing and consultation. Students attend the Reading Therapy Center, Inc. 2-4 hours a day, 4 days a week (Monday-Thursday). This intensive approach allows the student to improve and establish their skills in the shortest possible time. The length of treatment ranges from 2-5 months depending on the severity of the student’s difficulty.

At the end of the therapy period, students are post-tested to determine their progress and current skill levels. A post therapy consultation will take place with parents and the student, at which time testing results will be presented, further recommendations will be made, and questions answered.
